Abstract
1383303 Moderator structures BRITISH NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Ltd 26 Jan 1972 [3 Feb 1971] 3853/71 Heading G6C A moderator structure comprises a plurality of parallel vertical columns, which make mutual contact at particular levels, and restraint means for holding the columns together, at least some of the peripheral columns being divided into sections disposed end-to-end and connected together by hinge means which engage adjacent ends of adjoining sections in a manner permitting relative pivoting movement of the sections about a horizontal axis whilst preventing relative displacement of the adjacent ends transverse to this axis. As shown, the peripheral columns are each divided into sections 18, 20, 22 at each of the levels and the sections are pivotally connected together by rollers 19, 21 accommodated in recesses formed in the ends of the sections. The weight of the section or sections disposed above a section 20 causes it to exert a substantially horizontal force R towards the left, which force is transmitted via a projection 24 formed on section 20 to a part cylindrical projection 26 formed on an adjacent column 10. A tie band 14 engages the section 22 of each peripheral column and the horizontal component r of the force R is reacted on to this tie band. Differential thermal expansion in the horizontal direction between the columns 10 and the tie band 14 is accommodated by rotation of the section 20 about the lower roller 21. The upper end of section 20 and the lower end of section 18 are so shaped that when the reactor is shut down and the structure is cool the sections 18, 20 are in contact over a substantial portion of their end faces; the force R is then zero or very small and movement of columns into and out of the structure is facilitated. Means other than the tie band 14 can be used for providing radial support, e.g. support means attached to, and extending radially from, a wall of a pressure vessel surrounding the structure could be used.
