Abstract

878,122. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Oct. 28, 1958 [Oct. 28, 1957], No. 33599/57. Class 39(4). A spherical reactor pressure vessel 1 is formed from plates butt-welded at their edges and includes a circular bottom plate 3, a first course of ten petal-like plates 4, a narrow annular part 5, a second course of eighteen plates 7, further plate courses 9..14 and a top plate 15. The annular part 5 has a cruciform section, the portion 18 being welded at its inner periphery 6 to the plates 4 and at its outer periphery 8 to the plates 7. An upstanding projection 20 on the portion 18 is welded at 25 to a skirt 36 for supporting the reactor core and a downward projection 19 is welded at 26 to a skirt 32 for supporting the reactor on piers 34. The part 5 is formed from fifteen arcuate sections 27 welded end to end at 28, and the portions of the projections 19, 20 formed integrally with each section 27 stop short of the ends of the section, the gaps being closed by filter pieces 29 welded in place at 30. In a modification, the projections 19, 20 instead of forming a continuous annulus each form a number of spaced arcuate sections.
