Abstract
843,064. Casting-machines. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. June 30, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 20926/58. Class 83 (1). A vacuum bottom-pouring or top-pouring casting-apparatus comprises a sealed bell member 6 having a ring-like bearing plate 36 and a number of columns 38 rising from the plate to support a ladle L. The bell is guided by lugs 28 on to an annular base plate 14 carrying the vacuum connection 24. The top 48 of the bell is dished, to allow for expansion during the casting of metal into the mould M, and is supported by rods 50 from a ladle-supporting platform 40 carried by the columns 38. A vacuum of 100 microns H g is maintained in the bell, which is removed when casting is complete.
