Abstract
1313961 Machine for erecting blank about articles to be packaged STONE CONTAINER CORP 19 April 1971 [11 Feb 1970] 21513/71 Heading B8C In a machine for erecting a unitary paperboard blank, Fig. 10, carrying articles to be packaged on its base panel 201, the blank is drawn through an infeed opening 18 into an erection chamber (20, Fig. 1a), positioned below the opening 18, by a vertically reciprocatable vacuum assembly 24 causing flaps 210, 212, 214 and 216 and side wall panels 202, 204, 206 and 208 of the blank to be folded up around the articles by folding members 44, 45 and 58; the partially erected blank and its associated articles then move through three rectilinear paths in substantially the same horizontal plane and arranged in a U-shaped configuration to complete the formation of the package. Hence the partially completed package is pushed rear. wardly by horizontally reciprocable pusher arms 84 from the erection chamber (20) and along rails, defining one leg of the U, past glue heads which apply glue to the upper and lower outer surfaces of the flaps 210, 212, 214, 216. Further during this rearward movement the top panel 218 of the blank is folded down by folding members 94 and the side panels 220, 222, 206, 208 are once again folded by members such as 96 into contact with the now glued flaps 210, 212, 214, 216. The almost completed package is then received in the arms, 100, Fig. 5, of a carriage, 97, Fig. 5, and moved laterally along a support surface 98. During this lateral movement a line of glue is applied to the undersurface of the front flap 224 of the package from a glue dispenser (121, Fig. 4) actuated by the passage of the package. The front flap 224 is subsequently folded down and secured to the front panel 202. The package is then pushed out of the carriage 97 at the end of its lateral movement into a discharge shoot 131 by pusher arms 123, Fig. 5. The shoot comprises side plates 126 which have a sponge rubber section 173 with a highdensity polyethylene facing 173 and which press the side panels of the package inwardly. The width of the erection chamber 20 is made adjustable by the provision of a pair of aligned oppositely threaded shafts 50, 52 coupled by a member 47, which shafts 50, 52 engage in threaded mountings (72, 74, Fig. 6) secured to side supports 54, 56 of the erection chamber (20) so that as the shafts 50, 52 are rotated the side supports 54, 56 move together or apart. The width of the the discharge shoot 131 is adjustable in a similar manner.
