Claims. (Cl. 93-51) This invention relates to machinery for use in the fabrication of cartons and is more particularly concerned with improvements in a machine for setting up a tray type carton which is formed from a pre-cut and prescored blank of foldable sheet material.
lt is a general object of the invention to provide a machine for forming from a blank which is cut and scored to divide the same into a plurality of wall forming panels, a tray-like carton section having opposed upstanding side walls which are connected at adjacent edges by hinged web portions, with the web portions, in the erected form of the carton, being folded upon themselves and concealed between folded over side panels.
lt is a more specic object of the invention to provide a carton fabricating machine for forming, from a precut and pre-scored blank, a tray-like carton, which machine comprises mechanism for folding into upstanding relation to a bottom wall forming panel, pairs of 0ppositely disposed inner side wall panels which are connected to each other at adjoining ends by integral web portions, mechanism for folding the connecting web portions on themselves and against the outer surfaces of one pair of the side wall panels and mechanism for folding outwardly and downwardly outer side wall panels which are integral with the inner side wall panels against which the connecting webs are folded, thereby to form double panel walls with the connecting webs concealed between the same.
l't is a more specific object of the invention to provide a machine for folding from a pre-cut and pre-creased blank a tray-type carton wherein an apertured table is positioned above one end of a traveling conveyor with folder plates interposed between the conveyor and the table which fold inner side wall forming panels of the carton blank into upstanding relation to a bottom wall forming panel as lthe blank is forced through the aperture in the table top and downwardly onto the conveyor, and wherein the side Wall folders are arranged along opposite sides of the upper run of the conveyor for foldingdownwardly and then inwardly against the outer faces t of opposed inner side wall panels outer side wall panels which are integrally connected therewith.'
It is another object of the invention to provide a machine for forming a tray-like carton from a foldable blank which is divided by crease lines into a plurality of connected wall forming portions wherein an apertured forming table is positioned in spaced relation above one end of a conveyor and a plurality of folder plates are interposed between the conveyor and the apertured table and form a restricted pasageway for folding side wall forming portions of the blank into upstanding relation to a bottom wall forming portion when the blank is forced therethrough, the folder plates including members having inwardly curved surfaces for directing corner portions of the blank which have been folded upon themselves into engagement with the outer faces of adjoining side 'ice ,g Wall forming portions as the latter are brought forming position. p M p lt is another object of the invention to provide-a carton set-up machine of the type described wherein a verticalv folder chute is arranged above one end of a horizontally disposed conveyorv for passage'therethrough of a precut and pre-scored carton blank whereby to swingoppositvely disposed inner wall forming panels of the blank into upstanding side wall forming relation to a bottom forming panel thereofand wherein theconveyor has arranged along opposite sides thereof glue applicators for applying glue to outwardly disposed outer side wall-forming panels and folding plows for forcing the outer side wall forming panelsinto engagementy with the outer Asurfaces of the inner side wall forming panels, as ,the conveyor advances the partially formed carton away from the ver tical folder chute. j
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the carton folding machine which is shown'by Way of illustration in the accompanying drawings wherein:

Referring to the drawings,the set-up machine which is illustrated in Figures 1 to 5, will be morereadily understood by referring first.l to a particular carton structure (Figs. 6 to 9) which it is designed to erect, although l,the use of the machine is not limitedA to the particular carto arrangement which is describedherewith. l
`The carton 10 (Fig. 9) is formed from a blank 11 (Fig. 6) of paperboardy or similar materialjwhich is'cut, scored and partially folded prior to the set-up operations performed by the machine of the present invention., Brieiiy, the blank 11 comprises a central bottom wall forming panel 12, oppositely disposed integrally connectedpairs of inner side and end wall forming panels 13, 13' and 14, 14', respectively, extending aboutgthe periphery of the panel 12, the panels 14, 14 being referred to, for convenience in description, as end wall forming panels. Outer side wall forming panels 15, 15 are integrally connected to the inner side wall panels 13, 13' and an'outer bottom wall forming panel 16 is integrally connected to the `outer edge of the one outer side-wall panel 15', the latter two panels being folded about the edge forming crease dividing the same from the inner side wall panel 13' and adhesively'secured to the outer surfaces of the into wall inner side wall and bottom wallrforming panels 13 and 12 preparatory to the forming or setting-up operations which are performed by the machinel which is hereindescribed. The inner side wall panels 13, 13 and the inner end wallpanels 14, 14 are connected at their adjacent end edges by web portions 17 which are integral therewith and foldable upon themselves along diagonal score lines 1,8. 4'In addition to the side and end wall folding plate members 26 and 27the vertical folding chute comprises blocklike corner folding members 29 which have a bracket forming arm portion 30 adapted to be attached, by screws 3.1 or other fasteners, to thebottom corners of the side wall foldingplate members 27. The folder blocks 29 each have a curved .surface 32 which extends downwardly and inwardlyrelative to the chute and inwardly from the folding ,plate 27 on vwhich the block is supported. The fold forming surface portion 32 of the block member 29 is positionedbeneath al slot in the Work table 20 so that itengages with the folded edge formed on the crease line 1 8 of the corner connecting web portion 17 of the blank 11 `when theblank 11 is forced through the aperture 23 and `the side and end wall forming panels 13, 13 and 14, 14 arebrought into upstanding relation relative to the bottom wall forming panel 12; The upward folding of the wall panels 13, 13' and14, 14 causes each connecting web 17 to fold on itself and to, extend in an outward direction through a slot 25. As the blank 11 moves down through the folding chute the folder blocks 29 engage the folded web portions 17 and turn them inwardly against the outer faces of the upstanding end walls 14, 14. The upperportions of the depending plates 26 are curved outwardly so that the folded corner webs may be moved by the folder blocks 29 into position against the outside vfaces of the inner end wall forming panels 14,14' without any interference;

The cross beam 36 has its opposite ends attached by bolts V38v toU oppositely disposed vertical support rails 39 which are slidable in guideway forming bearing members 40 supported at opposite sides of the frame 21. The lower ends of the rails 39 are each pivotally connected at 41 to an operating link 42 which has its lower end pivoted at 43 to a plate eccentric 44 which is mounted on the end of a main `drive shaft 45. The drive shaft 45 is journaled in oppositely4 disposed bearing brackets 46 on the bottoml side frame forming members 47 of a longitudinally extendinginner frame portion. The side frame members 47 are supported on a pair of spaced cross bars 47 on the lower portion of the upright end frame 21. The drive shaft 45 is connected by drive sprocket 48 and chain 49 with the power output sprocket 50 on a combination motor and reduction gear unit 51 supported on the bottom frame members 47 in advance of the shaft 45.
.The conveyor 28 comprises laterally spaced chains 52 havingalseries of spaced,pusher` members 53 for `engaging`,and, advancingfsuccessive cartons along the top run thereof. `Thecarrie'r chains are-carried at one end on spaced spro'ckets54 ona cross shaft' 55 which has its ends journaled in bearing brackets 56 which are supported on side framemembers 57 extending longitudina'lly of the machine and attached to the upright frame 2,12 The ,chains 52`are carriedatthe forward end of the machine on sprockets 58Jonwthe cross shaft 59 with the latterfsupported'injbearing brackets 60 which are also supportedY on ,the side"f ijarr1e members 57. The chains 52 'are driven from the v,mfain drive ,shaft 45 by sprockets 61 which ,c'arry' the chains `52 'at the 'oneend of the lower run of the c'ouveyor. The upper yrun of the conveyor 28 travels `in a generallyhorizontalplane and is supported by upwardly opening guideway forming channel members 62; the'latter being' supported by longitudinally spaced upright brackets63'which are mounted at their lowernends on a pair of' longitudinallyA spaced lxed cross bars 64 between the upper' side frame members 57. Side guide' plates'65 are supported along opposite sides of the upper run of the conveyor 28 by upright bracket members 66 whichare mounted attheir 'lower ends on the guide members v62 for the chains52`.
The guide p plates are 4spaced laterally a distance approximatelyv 'equal to -the outside dimension of the carton which the 'machine is designedto handle so that the carton is `confinedbetween lthe guide plates 65 as it is advancedby the' conveyor 28, Aand the folded corner websections 417 are held against the upright inner end wall members 14, 14" as the Vcarton is received by the f 'l conveyor at the bottom of the3vertical folding chute and advanced toward the opposite end of the machine. The guide plates'65 have upwardly directed extension plates 67 vertically aligned with the end folder plates 26 which form the bottom side portions of the' folding chute. The inner faces of the extension plates 67 are in vertical planes' inwardly offset relative to the adjoining vertical faces of the'guide plates'65 and downwardly facing shoulder formations 68connectthe same which engage the Vuppermost edges ofthe foldedwebsectons 17 when the plunger 35 carries the carton blank to the bottom of the-folding chute.` The shoulder'formations 68 function as stripper means for'iinsuring against return or upward movement ofthe partially folded carton with the plunger 35 as thelatter is withdrawn. The guide ,plates ,are also connected at their ends by a laterally extending tensionspring 69 (Fig. 3) which resilientlf.' resists any tendency ofthe guide/plates to spread apart due to the movement ofthe plunger 35.
As the partially yfolded cartons vare advanced from beneath the vertical foldingchute the outer end wall formingpanels 19,19. are in upwardly extending post` tion and these panels are immediately swung to an outwardly extendingposition by cooperating curved upper and lowenplow forming folder rods 70 ,and 71 which are supported at each sideofthe conveyor on a bracket forming member 72. The bracket member 72 is attached to and depends from a plate or bar 73 which has a slot 74 in one end which receives a bolt 75 connecting the same in outwardly extending relation with the table top 20. The folder rods 7i? and 71 may be formed from a single bar or rod member with the end portion of the upper rod 70, which extends beneath the table top 29, curved upwardly and inwardly to insure proper engagement with the inner face of the end panel member i9 or 19 which is free to swing about the hinged connection with the inner end wall member 1d or when the carton is advanced by the conveyor 28 from beneath the vertical folding chute. The end portion of the lower folder rod 71 is curved in the opposite direction so that it will engage with the outer face of the panel member 19 or 19 and cooperate with the folder rod iii to guide the panel member to the glue applicator mechanism Sil, the lower rod 71 terminating at the latter so that the panel member will pass between the guide rods 7d and 71 and into the glue applicator.
Identical glue applicator mechanisms 8@ are supported at opposite sides of the conveyor 28 a short distance in advance of the vertical folding chute. Each glue applicator mechanism S'i comprises a pair of generally triangular shaped vertically extending spaced inner and outer support plates 81 and 82 which are connected at their bottom corners by sleeve members 83 carried on the cross bar supports 64. A common power shaft Se extends between the outer support plates 82 of the two mechanisms and is driven by sprockets thereon over which the lower runs of the chains 52 are carried. A short shaft S6 is journaled between the plates 81 and B2 in eccentric bearings which may be rotated by the adjusting and locking members VS6 to properly adjust the shaft 86 relative to the drive shaft 84. A glue feed roller 87 is carried on the drive shaft 84 which receives glue from a supply tank 8% Vmounted beneath the same. A glue applying roller 89 is mounted on the shaft S6 in vertical alignment and in peripheral engagement with the feed roller S7. The glue applying roller 89 is positioned so that the outwardly extending outer end wall forming panel or liap 19 or 19 engages with the applying roller 39 at the top of its path. The panel 19 or 19 is pressed against the roller S9 by a back-up roller which is mounted on a shaft 91 having its outer end journaled in an eccentric bearing which is in turn adjustably supported in the outer support plate 82. The back-up roller 90 is peripherally grooved so that it presents a pair of projecting peripheral shoulders 92 which are spaced apart a slightly greater distance than the width of the glue applying roller 89 so that when a carton panel passes between rollers S7 and S9, the shoulder formations 92 press the same against the glue applying roller 87 while the rollers are out of contact with each other when no part of the carton is passing between them. Cooperating interengaging gears 93 and 94 lare provided on the shafts 84 and 86, respectively, which cause the shafts to rotate at the same speed, the gears being of asize so that the peripheral speed of the rollers 87 and S9 is the same as the speed of the conveyor 28 which carries the carton. Preferably, the glue feed roller 87 is somewhat wider than the glue applying roller 89 and has a peripheral groove 95 to receive the glue applying roller 89.
The carton end wall panels or aps 19 and 19 are held in a generally horizontal plane as they pass between the rollers 89 and 9i). Thereafter these panels are turned down against the outer faces of the inner wall forming panels 14 and 14 by curved folder rods or plows 9e which extend from the bracket members 72 along the conveyor outside the side guide plates 65, the latter being cut away at 97 near the end thereof to permit the panels 19 and 19 to engage against the panels 14 and 14', respectively, and form the double panel end walls of the set-up carton.
As indicated in Fig. 3, the set-up machine has associated therewith a standard carton press 100 with driven laterally spaced pressure applying belts 101 between which the cartons are directed by driven stripper rollers 102 which receive the same from the conveyor 28 of the set-up machine.
ln operation the blank 11 is positioned over the folding aperture 23 in the table 20 and the downward movement of the plunger 35 carries the blank through the aperture 23 and the vertical folding chute beneath the same. As the plunger descends the side wall panels 13, 13' and the inner end wall panels 14, 14 are swung by the folder plates into upstanding relation to the bottom wall panel 12 with the corner connecting webs 17 being folded upon themselves as shown in Fig. 7, and then against the inner end wall panels 14, 14 by the folder blocks 29 as shown in Fig. 8. 'Ihe partially folded cartonis seated on the conveyor 28 and the plunger 35 retracts which permits the conveyor to advance the carton toward the glue mechanisms 80. The upstanding outer end wall panels 19 and 19 are swung outwardly by the plow members 70 and pass through the glue mechanisms 80 where a strip of glue is applied to the lowermost face thereof. As the carton is carried beyond the glue mechanisms 80, the plow members 96 swing the outwardly extending panels 19 and 19' downwardly and inwardly against the inner end wall panels 14 and 14 and into covering relation thereto with the folded corner connectingk web members 17 concealed between the doubled over panels forming the end walls. The completed carton is finally delivered to the carton press 100 at the end of the set-up machine. Successive cartons are carried through the machine and set up in the same manner.
While specific materials and particular details of construction have been referred to in describing the illustrated form of the set-up machine, it will be understood that other materials and different details of construction may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention.

l. A machine for setting up tray like cartons'of the type which are formed from a generally rectangular blank of paperboard material cut and scored to provide a bottorn and integrally hinged side and end walls, with the side and end walls being connected at adjacent ends by integral web portions which are adapted to be folded first upon themselves along diagonal hinge lines and then against the adjoining end wall and with the end walls having an integral outer cover panel which is adapted to be folded outwardly about the top edge thereof into covering relation with the connecting web portions, said machine comprising a supporting frame having a generally horizontal table top at one end thereof,
ksaid table top having an aperture corresponding to the shape of and somewhat larger than the bottom wall of the carton, a reciprocating member for engaging the bottom wall and for moving the carton through said aperture, side and end wall folder plates depending around the periphery of said aperture, corner web folder blocks at adjacent edges of said folder plates having inwardly curved surfaces for turning the wall connecting web portions, which are folded upon themselves by the passage of the carton through the aperture, against the upturfned end walls of the carton, a conveyor having one end of its upper run spaced beneath the aperture in said table top and adapted to receive thereon successive cartons in partially folded condition, folder members along the upper run of said conveyor for folding the outer cover forming end panels down against the end of the carton, and means for operating said conveyor to advance the cartons between said folder members.
2. A machine for setting uptray like cartons of the type which are formed from a generally rectangular blank of paper board material which is cut and scored to provide a bottom and integrally hinged oppositely disl posed side walls, with the side walls being connected at d adjacent-ends thereof-:by integralweb portions which are @scored to- .be folded first ;up,on themselves along diagonal lines andfthenlagainst one of-the adjacent side walls, the last mentionedjsidezwalis each `having anintegral outer cover panel wbichris adapted tobe folded outwardly about the top edge thereof intocovering relation with the-foldedweb portions, said machine. comprisingA a supporting framehaving` a generally horizontal top member at one end thereof, said top member having an aperture corresponding to ,the shape of and somewhat larger than the'bottom wallof the carton, a reciprocating ,t plunger member for engaging. the bottom wall and for` moving the carton through saidaperture, side wall folder plates depending4V around the periphery of said aperture and corner` folder blocks at adjacent edges of said side wall folder plates` having inwardly directed surfaces for turning thetconnect'ing web portions, which are folded upon themselvesby, the passage of the carton through the aperture, against oppositely disposed side walls of the` carton, a conveyor havingone end of its upper run beneath the4 aperture in said top member and adapted'toreceive thereon successive cartonsl in partially plow membersextending along` said conveyor for folding folded condition, means for advancing the conveyor, and the outer cover forming panels down against the side of thecarton.
3. A machine as'recited in claim 2, and glue applying mechanisms at opposite sides of said conveyor for applying glue to the outer cover panels prior to the folding thereof against the side of the carton.

A machine for settingup tray like cartons of the type which are formed from a generally rectangular blank of paperboard material cut and scored to provide a bottom and integrally hinged side and end walls, with the side 'and end walls beingl connected at adjacent ends bylintegral web portions, which web portions are scored to be folded first upon themselves along` diagonal hinge lines and then against the tend; walls and with the end walls each having an outer cover panel which is adapted to be folded outwardlyv about the top edge 'thereof into covering relation with the folded web portions, said machine comprising a supporting frame structure having a table top at one. endthereof, said table top having an aperture corresponding tothe shape of and somewhat larger than the bottom Wall of `the carton, a reciprocating plunger mounted above the table top for engaging the bottom wall and for moving the carton forming blank through said aperture, side and end wall folder plates depending around the periphery of said aperture and connecting webl folder blocks mounted below the corners of said aperture which have inwardly directed surfaces for turning the web portions asfthey are folded upon themselves by the passage through the aperture against the upwardly folded end walls, a carton advancing means mounted beneath the aperture in said table top and adapted to receive thereon successive cartons in partially folded condition, means adapted to apply adhesive to the outer cover forming, end panels, and folder members along said carton advancing meansl for folding the outer cover forming end panels down against the end of the carton.

A machine for setting up tray, like cartons of the type which are formed from a generally rectangular blank of paperboardmaterial cut and scored to provide a bottom and integrallyv hinged side and inner end wall members, which side and inner end wall members are connected at adjacent ends by integral web portions having diagonal fold lines and with the end wall members having an integrally connected outer panel which is adapted to be hinged outwardly. and downwardly into covering relation with the inner end wallV members and the connecting web portions, said machine comprising a supporting frame having a generally horizontal table top at one end thereof, said table top having an aperture corresponding to theshape of the bottom wall of the carton,

A set-up machine for folding the wall forming panels of a tray-type carton forming blank into upstanding relation to the bottom forming panel and for folding corner connecting web portions against oppositely disposed inner wall forming panels where they are trapped by folding thereover outer wall forming panels which are integrally hinged tothe top edges ofthe innerwall forming panels, said machine comprising a top member mounted on a supporting frame and having afoldingaperture therein, a folding chute extending vertically beneath said folding aperture, folder blocks in said chute having plow formingA faces for turning the corner connecting web portions, which are doubled upon 'themselvesA as they pass through said folding aperture, inwardly intoengagementwith the upstanding inner wall forming panels, areciprocating plunger for moving the carton blank through said folding` chute, a conveyor beneath said folding chute` and guide plates extending on opposite sidesof said conveyor` forA retaining the corner connecting` web portions against theV inner end wall panels as the particallyfolded carton is advanced by said conveyor fromtbeneath said folding chute.

A set-up machine as recited in claim 7, and said` guide plates having portionsextending beneath said folding chute in alignment with opposite walls thereof and 9 having downwardly directed inner shoulder formations for engaging over the top edges of said 'corner connecting web portions whereby to hold the partially folded blank against upward movement with said plunger.

In a machine for setting up tray like cartons of the type which are formed from a generally rectangular blank of paperboard material cut and scored to provide a bottom and integrally hinged side and end walls, with the side and end walls being connected at adjacent ends by hinged web portions adapted to be folded first upon themselves and then against the end walls and with the end walls having an outer panel which is adapted to be folded outwardly and downwardly about the top edge thereof into covering relation with the folded web portions, a supporting frame having a work table forming top at one end thereof which is provided with a folding aperture corresponding to the shape of the bottom wall of the carton and having slots at the corners which extend outwardly of the end edges and permit passage of the web portions in outwardly extending position, folder members spaced around the periphery of said aperture and dening a folding chute, folder blocks spaced beneath the slots at the corners of said aperture and having surfaces curved inwardly in both the transverse and longitudinal direction for turning the web portions which are folded upon themselves by the passage of the blank through the folding aperture inwardly against the upwardly folded end walls of the carton, and a reciprocating plunger for engaging the bottom wall and for moving the blank through said aperture and said folding chute.
l0. ln a machine for setting up tray like cartons of the type which are formed from a generally rectangular blank of paperboard material out and scored to provide a bottom and integrally hinged side and end walls, with 'the side and end walls being connected at Vadjacent ends by hinged web portions adapted to be folded rst upon themselves and then against'the end walls and with the end walls having an outer panel which is adapted to be folded outwardly about the top edge thereof into covering relation with the folded web portions, a supporting frame having a work top at one end thereof, which is provided with a folding aperture corresponding to the shape of and somewhat larger than the bottom wall of the carton and having slots extending at the corners outwardly of the end edges thereof permitting passage of the web portions in outwardly extending position, folder plates depending around the periphery of said aperture and deiining a folding chute, folder spaced blocks beneath the slots at the corners of said aperture and having curved surfaces extending downwardly and inwardly relative to the chute for turning the outwardly extending web portions, which are folded upon themselves by the passage of the blank through the aperture, against the upwardly folded walls of the carton, and a reciprocating plunger for engaging the bottom wall and for moving the blank through said aperture and said folding chute.

A set-up machine for forming a tray like carton section from a cut and scored blank, said machine comprising a blank supporting top member having a folding aperture therein, a folding chute depending from said top member in alignment with said folding aperture, a plunger mounted for reciprocating movement to carry successive blanks through the folding aperture and the folding chute, a conveyor beneath said folding chute to receive the partially folded blanks and to advance the same from l2. Ina carton set-up machine forv folding the side wallpanels of a tray type carton blank into upstandingy relation to a bottom wall panel, a vertically disposed folding chute through which the blank is advanced to partially fold the same, a conveyor at the bottom of the folding chute to which the blank in partially folded condition is delivered, guide bars along said conveyor for turning an upwardly directed wall panel to a horizontal position, and a glue applicator mechanism adjacent the conveyor for applying a stripe of glue to said panel while it is in said horizontal position, said glue applicator mechanism comprising a frame, a glue applying roll journaled in said frame, a cooperating back-up roller journaled in said frame, said glue applying roll and said back-up roller being located relative to said conveyor to receive said panel between the same, and a driving connection between said conveyor and said glue applying roll.

In a carton set-up machine for folding the side wall panels of a tray type carton blank into upstanding relation to a bottom wall panel, a vertically disposed folding chute through which the blank is advanced to partially fold the same, a conveyor at the bottom, of the folding chute to which the partially folded blank is delivered, guide bars along said conveyor for turning an upstanding outer wall panel iirst to a horizontal position and then outwardly and downwardly against an inner wall panel, and a glue applicator mechanism adjacent the conveyor for applying a stripe of glue to said panel when it is in a horizontal position, said glue applicator mechanism comprising a frame, a glue applying roll journaled in said frame, a cooperating back-up roller journaled in said frame, said glue applying roll and said back-up roller being located relative to said conveyor to receive said panel between the same, and means connected with said conveyor for rotating said glue applying roll at the same speed as the conveyor.

In a carton set-up machine for folding the side wall panels of a tray type carton blank into upstanding relation to a bottom wall panel and for adhesively securing an outer side wall forming panel to an inner side wall forming panel, a vertically disposed folding chute through which the blank is advanced to partially fold the same, a conveyor at the bottom of the folding chute to which the partially folded blank is delivered, guide bars along said conveyor for turning an upstanding outer wall panel rst to a horizontal position and then to a downwardly extending position against said inner side wall forming panel, and an adhesive applicator mechanism adjacent the conveyor for applying a stripe of adhesive to said outer side wall forming panel, said glue applicator mechanism comprising a frame, a glue applying roll journaled in said frame, a cooperating back-up roller journaled in said frame, said adhesive applying roll and said back-up roller being located relative to said conveyor to receive said outer side wall forming panel between the same, and a common drive means connected to said conveyor and to said adhesive applying roll.
