1285801 Wrapping in blanks BOWATER PACKAGING Ltd 4 June 1971 [8 June 1970] 27606/70 Heading B8C In a wrapping machine, a group P of packages is placed on the base panel B of a carton blank which is then pulled by a suction device (17, Fig. 1) through an aperture defined by folding means F so that side wall panels S, inner end closure flaps E, and outer end closure flaps O attached to the base panel B, of the blank, are erected. The blank is fed from a stack along guides 109 by conveyers 101 to a position above the folding means F, adhesive 107 being applied to the outer closure flaps O by applicators 105. The folding means F comprises hoops 11, 13 adapted to fold the side wall panels S and the inner closure flaps E, and cams 15 adapted to fold the outer closure flaps O and carried by an endless chain 14. When the blank has been drawn through the folding means F a wire 23 is advanced by a cylinder 25 to fold over a top panel T of the blank. The chain 14 is then actuated to carry the partially erected carton past a glue head 5 to a further station 7, the head 5 applying glue to a flap M connected to the top panel T. At the station 7 a leading outer closure flap O connected to the top panel T is guided beneath a plate 30 whereupon the chain 14 is halted and a piston 32 is retracted so that a pusher plate 38 pushes the carton into a tunnel 9. During this movement the closure flaps O are downfolded by ploughs 40 and the flap M is downfolded by folding arms 34. The walls of the tunnel are pneumatically biased inwardly and may comprise a friction-free surface mounted on sponge rubber. The carton is held in the tunnel until the adhesive is set. The various parts of the apparatus can be adjusted for differing size blanks. A described package feed comprises a tray (113, Fig. 3) fed with two rows of packs which, when they abut a sensor (117) are pushed laterally by a ram (119) on to trap doors (127) which then open to deposit the packs on the blank.
