Abstract

1456303 Wrapping articles EMHART CORP 19 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 7580/74 Heading B8C Apparatus for forming a box around an array of articles includes a vertically reciprocable mandrel 52 for forming a flat blank into a U-shape, and a vertically reciprocable, inverted U-shaped member 20 which moves an array of articles on to the U-shaped blank. Both the mandrel 52 and member 20 are mounted on a horizontally reciprocable carriage. In the embodiment shown the member 20 moves two layers of articles on to the blank, the top layer being held by suction while the bottom layer is formed on a lift table 16. An intermittently driven conveyer has pockets constituted by rear and front members 40, 42 mounted on different chains 36, 38 for adjustment on the spacing of the members. At a forming station 34 the mandrel 52 shapes the blank between pocket members 40, 42, the U- shaped member 20 moves the articles from the table 16 on to the shaped blank, and a device 60 folds the rear side flaps of the blank. As the conveyer advances the front side flaps are folded by rails 64, the top panel is folded downwardly and ploughs 70, 72 fold the top and bottom side flaps. Adhesive may be applied to the side flaps. When the box reaches a dead plate, adhesive is applied by a device 73 to the manufacturers flap which is then folded down, the succeeding boxes holding the flap down until the adhesive has dried. In another embodiment the member 20 moves a single layer of articles on to the blank and has cams on its side plates to stagger the articles in one row with respect to the articles in adjacent rows. The rows are moved together by conveying plates as the member 20 moves towards the blank.
