Abstract

1,049,429. Packaging machines; packages. ST. REGIS PAPER CO. Sept. 6, 1963, No. 35350/63. Heading B8C. In a method of packaging a group of containers, e.g. bottles, in a wrap-around precreased blank having portions for partially enclosing the ends of the package to assist in retaining the containers, the portions being a pair of flaps extending along and integral with the ends of the base and side panels, the contents are placed on the flat blank, the flaps are folded up through 90 degrees, and the flap portion integral with either the side panels or the base folded further through a greater angle as the side panels are folded up relative to the base, whereby gussets are formed between the flap portions to be trapped between the panels and the containers. In the package shown formed from the blank 1, Fig. 7, container separator tabs 61, 63 are raised from a base panel 2 and containers 3 placed therebetween. Flaps 10, 11 are folded perpendicular to panel 2 to form end pieces, and flaps 12, 13 and 14, 15 are folded flat against panels 4 and 5 respectively as the latter are folded upwardly, so holding flaps 12-15 against the containers and forming gussets at 49, 50, 53, 54. Flaps 23 and 30 are folded over one row of containers so that cups 31 enter apertures 27, and panel 35 is inserted between the rows. Flaps 24, 38 and 41 are then folded over the containers and tabs 44 inserted in holes 45 to close the package, with caps 31 engaging slots 42, 43. The end flaps 10 and 11 may be discontinuous (not shown). In apparatus for forming the packages the blanks are fed singly from a magazine by endless chains 58, Fig. 1, and have the tabs 61, 63 raised before passing on to flights 78, 79, and between spacers 81, 82 of a conveyer 70, Fig.6. Groups of six containers are fed on to the blank between spacers 81, 82 from conveyers 67, the spacers serving to check the flow from the conveyers between the depositing of each group, and cam-operated folding plates 83 lift to fold the leading and trailing flaps 12, 10, 14 and 13, 11, 15 respectively, of adjacent blanks vertically. Ploughs 90, Figs. 1, 8 and 10, androtating discs 93, fold flaps 12-15 beyond the right-angle position and the side panels 4, 5 are folded upwardly by ploughs 91. They are then held vertical between chains 106 whilst a plough 108 folds over top panels 23, 33, and tucks panel 35 between the rows and a plough 109 folds over panels 24, 38 and 41. A device 110 inserts tabs 44 in holes 45 to complete the package. In a second embodiment (not shown) the containers are laid on flaps 4 and 5 before these are raised to the vertical position and in this case flaps 12-15 retain the containers whilst flaps 10 and 11 and the gussets lie flat against the base panel. In a further embodiment the blank may be applied on top of a group of containers and folded downwards about them. Flaps similar to flaps 10 and 11 may be included depending from the top panel of the package.
