Abstract

1313796 Replenishing photographic silver halide developers. Automatic control of proportion I P C SERVICES Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 April 1970] 18830/70 Headings G2A G2C and G3R A photographic silver halide developer solution is replenished to correct (i) decrease in unoxidized developing agent concentration and an increase in halide ion concentration due to the development of silver halide materials, and (ii) decrease in unoxidized developing agent concentration due to aerial oxidation, by using two developer replenisher solutions having different halide ion concentrations. In the Fig., a developer sample drawn from the development tank 1 by a sampling pump 6 is sensed for the state of oxidation of the developing agent by the redox electrode 5 and for halide ion concentration by the halide sensor electrode 11. The halide electrode 11 controls addition by pump 17 of the first replenisher solution which preferably contains fresh (unoxidized) developer solution and has zero halide ion concentration. The redox electrode 5 controls addition by pump 16 of the second replenisher solution which preferably contains fresh developer and has a halide ion concentration equal to the desired concentration in the developer. A time switch 19 allows the system to be operated at selected time intervals and an electronic or mechanical logic device may prevent addition of the second replenisher when the addition of the first replenisher is required.
