Abstract

131,019. Mooney, D. J. March 21, 1918. Framework.-Spars, girders, longerons, and like structural members of aircraft are formed from a pair of thin metal channel members having four-sided flanges. The channel members may be arranged in contact as shown in Fig. 7 and stiffened by tubes or channel-pieces i, or the members may be separated by wood or metal distance-pieces. In the construction shown in Fig. 17, the channel members are reversed, the flanges being secured to a box-like distance-member k. The web portions are pierced to reduce weight, and the flanges may be connected by strips longitudinally corrugated or of channel form. Longitudinal stiffening-pieces may be arranged diagonally in the flanges. Specification 8522/12 is referred to.
