Abstract
126,875. Duncan, B. A. Aug. 17, 1918. Framework.-Girder-like parts for aeroplanes and air-ships, particularly for use as wing spars or ribs or as the side of a fuselage, comprise metallic longitudinals connected together by a web formed of one or more coiled spring-like metal lengths Figs. 1 and 2 show a girder formed of longitudinals a, c having opposed concave seatings a<2>, c<2> to receive the curved portions x<3> of coiled lengths x, the straight portions x<2> of which are arranged to cross, as shown, being riveted together at e. The strips x are riveted at f to the longitudinals. Each length x is formed with a central corrugation d<2>, the portions at each side of the corrugation being bent inwards along the straight portions x<2>, as shown in section in Fig. 2. In a modification, each longitudinal is formed with two or more concave seatings receiving coiled lengths arranged side by side. Fig. 7 shows a longitudinal a adapted for use at the four corners of a structure, the four longitudinals being connected by coiled webs d. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the web members are bent around tubular longitudinals a and corrugated as shown at d<3>.
