Abstract

1309917 Hatch covers HATCHWAY DYNAMICS Ltd 17 Sept 1971 [23 Sept 1970 25 June 1971] 45394/70 and 29999/71 Heading B7S [Also in Division E2] A hatch cover 11 moves on rollers 12 into and out of a hatch closing position in which it is lowered into and raised out of engagement with sealing surfaces by the action of cams 24 on its rollers. Each cam moves in a slot 20 in the coaming 10, the slot being shaped, Fig. 6 (not shown), so that when the cam is in its ghost position, a roller will move over the slot, but when the cam is moved to its solid line position, a roller can enter the slot. The cams along each side of the hatchway are linked by cable 27 to each other and to two operating pulleys (32 and 33), Fig. 7 (not shown). The pulleys are rotated to move the cams by a drive wheel 37 acting through gearing in a unit 36 which is pivoted about the pulley axis. The hatch cover is driven along the hatchway by the engagement of a driven pinion 15 with pins 16 projecting from a rail 13 on which runs a roller (14) coaxial with the drive wheel. Removal of a pin 36a allows a rail section 41 and its associated pins 16 to fall into a slide box 40 so that the pinion 15 and its associated roller (14) are free to move downwards on operation of the cams. Removal of the pin 36a allows the unit 36 to be pivoted to a position, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which pins 38 on the drive wheel 37 are engaged by the pinion 15. The unit 36 is held in position by inserting the pin 36a into a hole in a lug 39 and an aligned hole m a fixed bracket. Operation of the normal hatch cover drive then acts through the drive wheel 37 to move the cams 24. In another embodiment, Figs. 8-12 (not shown), the cam cables have their own drives in the form of rams which act to displace pulleys around which the cable runs. The hatch cover is itself moved by cables operated by a derrick or winch. In a further embodiment (not shown), the cables along the sides of the hatchway are linked by a cable extending along one end of the hatchway and the two ends of the resulting drain are acted on by a jack or jacks to give the required wedge movement.
