Abstract

The disclosure relates to a door for use in marine environments, the door being rotatable about a support frame on which are mounted hinges secured to the door. The door is raised for rotation of the door by means of sliding the door hinges along the support frame to clear obstructions in front of the door. The door movement is provided preferably by a hydraulic cylinder though a manually operated screw or winch or a hydraulic pneumatic or motor driven winch, screw, rack and pinion etc. can be used.

UNITED STATES PATENTS 3/1925 Wilbur 49/255 screw, rack and pinion etc. can be used.
3 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures door equal to the width of the door, or split door hinged at both sides and requiring an unobstructed distance thereinfront equal to half of the width of the door; or a vertical sliding door requiring overhead room above the door equal to the height of the door; or a track guided door similar to the standard garage door whose upper edges move forward while the lower edges move up so that in its final position the door is overhead and parallel to the ceiling. Sectional doors are not practical for marine use because it is difficult to make them watertight. Marine type doors, because of their need to be fireproof, watertight and resistant to hydrostatic pressure, are conventionally heavy. Therefore a winch or similar device is required to lift a door of this type which is of the vertical opening type and safety precautions must be taken to prevent accidental dropping of the heavy door. Further disadvantages of the vertically moving doors are obstruction of overhead lighting and interference due to pipes, wiring, air ducts, beams and thelike.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a door for marine use which is of the side hinged or split type wherein the door is vertically raised by moving the door along with its hinges along the support frame on which the hinges are mounted. The door is moved by means of a hydraulic cylinder or the like, preferably mounted on the support frame and acting against one of the hinges to raise the hinge along with the door.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a door for marine use capable of opening when obstructed.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a door for marine use capable of opening when obstructed which is more economical, safer and requires less headroom than prior art doors.
The above objects and still further objects of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art after consideration of the following preferred embodiment thereof, which is provided by way of example and not by way of limitation, wherein:
FIG. I is a top view of a mounted door in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a front view of the mounted door in accordance with the present invention; and
FIG. 3 is a side view of the mounted door in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to the figures, there is shown a deck I having an obstructing machine such as a horizontal conveyor or the like 3 mounted thereon. A door frame or doorway flange 5 which can be a bulkhead wall of a ship or the like of well known type extending to the deck 1 has a support frame 7 mounted therearound. A
further flange 12 is secured to the wall or the like over the door frame 5 to which is secured a hydraulic cylinder 9. The door 11 has a pair of hinges l3 and 15 secured thereto, the hinges being secured to and rotatable in members 18 and 20 which are mounted on a sliding plate 22. The sliding plate 22 moves in a guide 24 of a slide block 26. The guide 24 is secured to door frame 5. The hydraulic cylinder 9 has a shaft 18 extending therefrom which is secured to plate 22 at point 28. The door 11 is adapted to be moved by operation of the hydraulic cylinder 9 to the position shown in phantom in FIG. 2. There is also provided a dog 17 for sealing the door 11 by compressing watertight gasket 30. A control device 19 composed of push buttons 21 for controlling a pump 23 which drives the hydraulic cylinder 9 is also provided.
In operation, when the door 11 is obstructed by an obstruction 3, dog 17 is opened to free the door seal, the push button means 21 is operated, thereby operating the pump 23 and causing the hydraulic cylinder to operate in well known manner. The cylinder 9 operates on the shaft 18, causing the shaft to rise vertically to the position shown in phantom in FIG. 2. Upward movement of the shaft 18 causes the plate 22, member 18 and 20, hinges l3 and 15 and door 11 which are secured to the shaft to move vertically also. The door 11 can now be rotated about the hinges l3 and 15 above the obstruction 3 to. the open position as shown in phantom in FIG. I. The door 11 can be returned to its original position, either in the open or closed condition by further operation of the push button 21.
Itcan be seen that there is provided a door and door hinge which is simple, economic to produce and which is capable of opening even when an obstruction is present.
It should be understood that other motive means, for the shape 18 can be used, such as for example, a manually pumped hydraulic system, manually operated screw or winch means or power operated pneumatic cylinders or motor driven winches, screws, racks and pinions and the like as well as the specific embodiment described.
Though the invention has been described with respect to specific preferred embodiments thereof, many variations and modifications will become apparent to those skilled in the art. It is therefore the intention that the appended claims be interpreted as broadly as possible in view of the prior art to include all such variations and modifications.
What is claimed is: 1. A door hinge mounting comprising: a wall having an opening therethrough, a guide element fixed to the wall adjacent an edge of the opening, a door for covering the opening, a door support member hinged to said door for relative swinging movements of said door and support,
said support member being mounted on said guide member for movement therealong only in a direction parallel to the hinge axis for covering or uncovering at least a portion of the opening,
and power means connected to said support member for moving it along the guide element.
2. A door hinge mounting according to claim 1 wherein the power means is a hydraulic cylinder secured to said wall.
3. A door hinge mounting according to claim 2 further including a driving member operated by said cylinder movable parallel to the hinge axis and connected to the door support member for effecting said movement thereof.
