Abstract

1309178 Compositions for preventing or fighting fires ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 13 July 1971 [23 July 1970] 32873/71 Heading A5A A process for preventing or fighting fires comprises applying to a flammable or burning substrate, e.g. growing vegetation, an aqueous solution containing 0.5-6% by wt alkali metal borate and 0.5-6% of a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol. The solution is formed in situ by projecting separate streams of borate solution and polymer solution from a dispensing mechanism so as to converge before striking the substrate. Thus the dispensing mechanism may comprise two adjacent nozzles or two concentric coterminous nozzles. The borate may be a Na or K salt of H 2 B 4 O 7 , HBO 2 , H 3 BO 3 , H 2 B 2 O 4 , H 2 B 6 O 10 , H 2 B 12 O 19 , H 6 B 4 O 9 or H 6 B 8 O 15 , particularly sodium tetraborate decahydrate, Na 2 B 4 O 7 loH 2 O. The polymer may be partially esterified or etherified.
