Abstract

Fires are extinguished with a foam formed from a composition comprising a water-soluble surface-active organo-silicon compound. A suitable foam concentrate contains 10-100% by wt of the active substance, and is diluted to 0.2-4% by wt. solution in water and/or a water-miscible organic solvent e.g. ethanol for use. The organo-silicon compound preferably contains, to provide hydrophilic properties, at least one sulphate or sulphonate group neutralised with an alkali or amine, or at least one amine group neutralised with a hydrogen halide, or at least one polyethylene glycol radical.
