Abstract
A composition for killing weeds comprises a chlorate of an alkaline earth metal and at least 5 per cent of one or more soluble non-oxidizing compounds of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, the non-oxidizing compound should be one which produces a non-volatile alkaline residue on ignition and which in solution reduces the ionization due to hydrolysis of the chlorate to chloric acid and the composition should be substantially free from any other oxidizing agent and from acidifying agents and combustible carbonaceous material. The addition of the non-oxidizing compounds is stated to reduce the fire hazard due to the use of the chlorates whilst rendering them more effective as weed-killers. Non-oxidizing compounds specified are the carbonates, bicarbonates, acetates, aluminates, borates, silicates, formates, hydroxides, ferrocyanides and phosphates. The composition preferably contains 1-10 parts non-oxidizing compound or compounds to 10 parts of chlorate; in examples the compositions comprise 6 parts sodium chlorate to 4 parts of sodium carbonate, and 6 parts of sodium chlorate to 3 parts of sodium carbonate and 1 part of sodium acetate the latter composition may be produced by adding acetic acid to a solution of sodium chlorate and sodium carbonate. The composition may be applied dry but is preferably applied in the form of a 5-20 per cent solution. Specification 396,701 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 451,894, [Group III].
