Abstract
543,302. Adhesives. VENESTA, Ltd., and BROWN, A. C. Aug. 19, 1940, No. 13190. [Class 121] A dry casein or other protein adhesive, for use admixed with water, particularly for uniting metal, such as aluminium or aluminium or magnesium alloys, to another surface, such as plywood, is mixed with a chromate or bichromate to reduce or prevent corrosion. The chromate may be readily soluble such as alkali metal or ammonium chromate or bichromate or slightly soluble such as an alkaline earth, e.g. strontium-chromate. The adhesive is made up by mixing casein, soya bean residue, castor oil bean residue or other protein with an alkali or a mixture such as fluoride or other salt of sodium or potassium and calcium hydroxide, which liberate alkali on addition of water. Fillers, an anti-septic such as o-phenyl-phenol or pentachlorophenol, and after mixing the adhesive with water, a substance to reduce brittleness after setting such as rubber latex or glycerine may be added.
