Abstract

The size of the dispersed polymer particles in a butadiene-polymer synthetic rubber latex containing 2-10 parts of a water soluble soap of soap-forming monocarboxylic acid per 100 parts latex solids and having a pH from 8 to 11 is increased by reducing the pH of the latex to 5,5 to 7,5 in the presence of 0,01-1% of polyvinyl methyl ether based on the latex solids and then increasing the pH to 8 to 11. Butadiene styrene copolymer is the preferred rubber. Specified soaps are the alkali-metal, ammonium and amine salts of higher fatty acids of 10 to 24 carbon atoms or of rosin acids including dehydrogenated, hydrogenated and disproportionated rosin acids. Other surface-active dispersing agents e.g. alkyl sulphonates, alkyl and alkyl aryl sulphonates may also be present. The pH may be reduced using carbondioxide, formic or acetic acid, sodium silicofluoride, or an ammonium salt of a strong acid together with formaldehyde. The pH may be increased, e.g. by adding ammonia, or sodium or potassium hydroxide. The latex may have an initial solids content of 20-50% and finally be concentrated, e.g. by evaporation of water, to 55 to 70%.
