Abstract
Pigmentary calcium carbonate, of particle size preferably 0.1 microns or less, is coated with a fatty acid compound and an amine in a molecular ratio of 1:1 to 7:1, the combined coating constituting from 2 to 3.5% by weight of the calcium carbonate. The fatty acid is one having 10 to 20 carbon atoms, a rosin acid or an alkali metal salt or lower ester of the rosin acid, whilst the amine is an n-alkyl amine containing 10 to 18 carbon atoms or a rosin amine. Coating may be effected by blending an amine salt of a fatty acid with the calcium carbonate pigment and then with the fatty acid compound, or the order may be reversed. The calcium carbonate may also be treated with an aqueous slurry of the amine and then hammer milled with the fatty acid compound, but preferably the calcium carbonate is treated with an aqueous slurry that contains an emulsion of both the alkylamine and the fatty acid compound. According to Examples (1) calcium carbonate is treated with a C16 to C18 alkylamine derived from tallow, and stearic acid as an emulsion in water containing triethanolamine as emulsifying agent. (2) An aqueous slurry of calcium carbonate was treated with an emulsion of the amine of (1) at 120 DEG F., filtered, washed and re-slurried and then treated with an emulsion of stearic acid. Further examples refer to the substitution of stearic acid by lauric acid and the use as the alkylamine of decylamine, dodecylamine, dehydroabietylamine, or abietylamine.
