Abstract

1305023 Wrapping smoke-filter rods MOLINS MACHINE CO 2 June 1970 [3 June 1969] 28077/69 Heading A2C [Also in Division D1] A continuous filter rod making machine has a garniture 1 into which a web of wrapping paper 2 is carried on a garniture tape 3. Filter material 6, in the form of a tow or web, is fed through a funnel 4 and tongue 5 into the garniture 1 which folds and seals the wrapper 2 around the filter material to form a continuous rod which is subsequently cut up to provide filter plugs for cigarettes. Polyvinyl acetate adhesive is applied in a first line 7 along one edge of the wrapper 2 by a first gun 8 and serves to secure the two edges of the wrapper together to form the tube. A second gun 9 deposits three parallel lines of adhesive 10, 11, 12 which serve to hold the filter material in place in the tube. The gun 9 has an elongated nozzle 13 having a bearing surface 16 with three orifices 14 through which the adhesive issues, the paper web running between the bearing surface and a support bridge 15. A notch or step 17 is formed in the nozzle immediately downstream of the orifices, the step promoting the distinct formation of the three lines of adhesive and inhibiting the deposition of excess adhesive on the web.
