Abstract
1303957 Altering physical properties INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970] 23739/71 Heading B3V [Also in Division C7] A Zn-Cu or Zn-Cu-Al alloy containing, by weight, from 6 to 12% Cu and from 0 to 36% Al and in ingot form, is reduced by warm working to such a thickness that it is capable of superplastic deformation. The reduction, performed by one or more of extrusion, rolling, swaging and drawing, is preferably greater than 90% and performed at temperatures up to 700 F. for the Zn-Cu alloys and between 300 and 500 F. for the Zn-Cu-Al alloys. Before warmrolling, the ingot is side-forged. A tabular statement of alloys is given which includes the following improving elements: Mg, Mn, Cr and Ni up to 1À0%, preferably 0À01% Mg, 6À3% Mn, 0À3% Cr and 1À0% Ni. A quenching step may be included. The Zn-Cu material produced may be formed at 500 to 650 F., that including Al being formed at 550 to 700 F. and then preferably heat-treated. Alloys with less than 5% Al may be plated, painted and welded using standard Zn procedures.
