Abstract
1298321 Continuous casting machines SOUTHWIRE CO 20 Jan 1970 [13 March 1969] 2727/70 Heading B3F A continuous casting process in which molten metal is poured into a mould formed by a peripheral groove of a rotable casting wheel and a continuous flexible band is characterized by applying a relatively low volume of coolant to portions of the external surfaces of the mould during the initial stages of casting and subsequently increasing the volume of flow of the coolant to the same portions of the external surfaces of the mould and applying additional volumes of the coolant to other portions of the external surfaces of the mould as the mould temperature increases. The first application of coolant may be started prior to any increase in mould temperature, i.e. before pouring of the metal is begun. Coolant is supplied to a nozzle assembly 30, upper band header 40, lower band header 41, rear band header 42, side headers 45 and 46 and casting wheel headers 48, 49 and 50 by branch conduits 54-62 extending from a main conduit 52 having a main control valve 70. The latter is by-passed by a conduit 73 which communicates with nozzle assembly 30, upper band header 40 and casting wheel header 48 thus enabling coolant to be supplied to these three units alone during the initial stages of casting. The remaining parts of the machine are similar to those described in Specification 1,161,845.
