Abstract

1,161,845. Continuous casting-machines. SOUTHWIRE CO. 17 July, 1967 [18 July, 1966], No. 32744/67. Heading B3F. In a rotating grooved wheel type of continuous casting machine the closing band 11 is cooled by a means R that comprises a mould entry portion cooling device 30 that directs coolant in the direction of movement of the band 11 and along its surface, and further cooling devices 31, 32 that direct coolant on to the band 11 in a direction perpendicular to its movement, the devices together comprising the " initial " cooling means of the molten metal up to the point C of the moving mould M. The cooling device 30 is wedge shaped to enable it to be fitted close to the portion of the band 11 adjacent the entry portion A of the mould. The devices 30, 31, 32 are fed by pipes 48, 34 that include independently adjustable valves 46, 47 and 50. The cooling device 30 may be used on its own to pre-cool the band 11 before molten metal is poured, during which a main valve 51 is closed and a by-pass line 53 and valve 54 allow a low-pressure flow. The machine also includes means 19-22 for cooling the inside 18 of the rotating wheel 13 and means 25, 26 for cooling the sides 24 of the said wheel.
