861,273. Continuous-casting machines. COMPAGNIE DES METAUX D'OVERPELTLOMMEL ET DE COMPHALIE. May 21, 1959. No. 17357/59. Class 83 (1). In a wheel-type continuous-casting machine, the endless metal band which closes an arcuate portion of the wheel-groove to form the mould cavity, is only weakly tensioned, a liquidtight-fit against the wheel-rim being secured by a device outside the wheel which applies the metal band against the rim, In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the band 3 is held against the wheel 1 by an endless-chain of metal blocks 7 backed by spring-loaded rollers 13. Coolant issues from nozzles 20. The band 3 is tensioned by a weight 24. To prevent the band curving inwardly into the wheel-groove 2, the bars are magnetized over that portion of their path where the band is in contact with the casting-wheel. Alternatively, magnets may be mounted above the band. Alternatively the bars 7 may be permanently fixed to the band 3. In a further modification, the casting is performed at the lower part of the wheel periphery, so that gravitational forces correct the tendency of the metal band to curve into the groove. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the band is backed by a spring-loaded cradle 49, with coolant passages 38 and a polished contact surface with grooves 42 to which lubricant is automatically fed under pressure from a device 41. Alternatively, the surface of the cradle may comprise a series of small rollers. In a further modification, Figs. 9 and 10, the edges of the band are held to the wheel-rim by rollers 61 carried on a spring-loaded frame 14 and the band is prevented from curving inwardly by the engagement of rollers 62 mounted on the back of the band, with rails 57 carried by the frame 14.
