Abstract
1,065,037. Pressure casting machines. GEBRUDER BUHLER. Sept. 17, 1965 [Sept. 23, 1964], No. 39794/65. Heading B3F. In a cold chamber pressure die casting machine having an associated melting crucible from which the molten metal to be cast is delivered to the slot well (21), Fig. 1 (not shown), means are provided to prevent melt residues being deposited on the piston and cylinder walls of the injection pump mounted above the melt crucible. The pump body (13) is mounted on the cover (6) of the crucible (2) or may be formed integral therewith and has a cylinder (14) and a co-operating piston (23). The cylinder is counterbored at its uppermost portion (58) to a larger diameter than the piston so that when the latter is fully retracted any melt residues withdrawn with the piston collect in the counterbored portion and subsequently drain back to the melt through a port (53) in the cylinder wall. In addition the pump unit is enclosed by a partition or screen (11) which is provided with holes (12) so as to strain the molten metal to prevent slag and other material entering the pump unit. An alternative form of screen for the molten metal is indicated in Fig. 2 (not shown). In other embodiments (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the pump body is provided with small apertures (57) to effect straining of the molten metal prior to its entering the pump. The partition in Fig. 3 is in the form of a shroud integral with the pump and having clearance with the crucible bottom. In Fig. 4 the partition is straight and divides the crucible into two parts. Means are provided for supplying protective gas to the melt in the region of the pump unit and thermally insulating cap is provided to cover that part of the pump above crucible cover. In alternative embodiments, not shown, separate interconnected crucibles may be used.
