1288408 Papermaking BELOIT CORP 27 Oct 1969 [2 Dec 1968] 52544/69 Heading D2A A web pickup arrangement comprises a looped Fourdrinier wire 11, a couch roll and a contact roll 15 arranged below and nearer to the headbox than the couch roll to provide a downwardly facing run, a pickup roll 29 disposed between the couch and contact rolls, a pair of coacting superposed press rolls rotating on vertically spaced axes and defining a press nip, and a felt 32 urged into contact with the pickup roll, and carrying the web through the press nip. As shown, web W passes under lump-breaker 27, and is picked off downwardly facing run R by roll 29, which may be a suction roll, as shown, and thence removed by felt 32. The pickup roll is provided with shower 31. The wet press may be two plain rolls, a plain roll and a suction roll, or, as shown, a plain roll 49, and a grooved roll 50, provided with doctor 53 and cleaning shower 51. There may be more than one wet press. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), the pickup roll may be wrapped by the felt, and the web carried away on the underside of a felt run, with wire side outward.
