Abstract

499,657. Wet presses for paper-making machines. MILLSPAUGH, W. H. July 26, 1937, No. 20598. [Class 96] In a paper-making machine having a wet press beyond the wire cloth 11 comprising two suction press-rolls 1, 2, a plain intermediate roll 3 arranged to coact with the two suction rolls and two endless press felts 5, 6 each extending over and around one of the suction press-rolls, the axes of the suction rolls 1, 2 are arranged below the axis of the plain roll and the stationary suction boxes 1a, 2a within the suction rolls are so arranged in relation to the two bites between the two suction rolls and the plain roll that water expressed from the wet web of paper 7 and into and through the felts will be drawn into and from the suction boxes. The two felts 5, 6 may be of different texture. The two felts may be replaced by a single endless felt extending over each of the suction rolls and below the plain roll. The plain roll may be carried by pivoted arms 4 so as to press freely against the suction rolls. The axes of the two suction rolls may be in the same horizontal plane or the axis of the second suction roll may be lower than that of the first suction roll. One or more of the rolls may be mounted in laterally adjustable bearings so that the rolls may be moved radially relatively to one another. All the rolls may be positively driven or two rolls only may be positively driven, the third roll being driven by friction contact with the other rolls ; the peripheral speed of the rolls may be synchronized for example by the means described in Specification 458,756 or 458,757, or by means of multiple belts driven by a series of expanding cones mounted on the rotating shaft of a driven roll. The wet web of paper may be transferred from the wire cloth 11 to the felt 5 of the wet press by means of a felt 10, Fig. 4, and suction roll 8 located after but adjacent the suction box 9a of the couch roll 9 as described in Specification 458,758 ; the two felts 5, 10 with the web of paper therebetween preferably pass through the bite of a preliminary pair of press rolls 12, 13, the lower one 13 being a suction roll and the upper one 12 being plain roll.
