Abstract

1,178,861. Papermaking. BELOIT CORP. 16 Feb., 1967 [7 March, 1966], No. 7414/67. Heading D2A. At the couch of a Fourdrinier machine, the felt on to which the web is to be couched runs over a stationary slipper in place of the usual roll. This slipper has a curved surface the radius of which decreases progressively in the direction of travel of the felt and web, and diverges sharply from the wire. As shown, the web W is couched from the wire 10 to the felt 12 driven by the power fabric 18. Spray from the felt is collected in the saveall 17, and the felt and power fabric are pressed on to the wire by the slipper 19. Water is supplied to the underside of the wire by a weir box 20 and flow plate 21, or by a shower (not shown). The slipper is pivotably mounted (Fig. 2, not shown) to vary the pressure of contact and length of the backflow zone in which the sheet is washed on to the felt. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), a roller of small diameter forms the outgoing side of the slipper, and is driven in the direction opposite that of the felt, water is sprayed on to the top run of the felt, and excess is doctored off. The power fabric may pass with the felt through the first wet press.
