Abstract

1284878 Artificial legs CHAS A BLATCHFORD & SONS Ltd 1 Dec 1969 [2 Dec 1968] 57061/68 Heading A5R An artificial leg having upper and lower members hinged together includes a fluid operated control device (3) which comprises a closed cylinder of adjustable length including a piston having an attached rod extending through one end of the cylinder such that the rod is connected to the upper member of the artificial leg and the cylinder to the lower member. The piston and cylinder comprises a closed system such that when the piston moves upwards fluid is expelled through an enlargement 7A into a passage 7C which communicates with air tubes 8 and 9 running outside the cylinder from an upper housing 4A to a lower housing 4B. At their lower ends passages 8 and 9 communicate with a bore 10A having a further air passage 10 communicating with the interior of the cylinder. Passages 8 and 9 contain adjustable needle valves at their upper ends to control fluid flow therethrough. Bore 10A contains a non return valve which permits fluid flow in one direction only from passage 9 to passage 10 while allowing fluid flow in both directions between passages 8 and 10. By varying these valves the "swing phase" of the artificial leg can be controlled. The cylinder includes an axially movable plug 5 screwed into upper housing 4A to vary the length of the cylinder.
