Four-stroke-cycle engines; charge, cooling; cylinders, construction of and cooling.-In an engine in which a supplementary charge for scavenging or adding to the normal charge is cooled in a pump chamber n, and in which a valve q is provided to open the pump space to the atmosphere when the additional charges are not required, the transfer passages l from the pump to the combustion space are provided with a cooling-jacket which may be in parallel or in series with the main jacket around the combustion chamber. A liner b is secured by a collar h to the cylinder a, the lower portion c of which makes a tight joint with the water jacket f at d and e. Specification 111,792 is referred to.
