Levels.-A graduated level 10 for determining the horizontal distance between, and the relative elevation of, two points is provided with a graduated extension 14<a> slidable in the base of the level and manipulated through a finger-hole 14<c>, and with a graduated rule 12 adjustable at right-angles to a level in a bearing 11 at one end. One end of the level or the extension may be supported on a levelling-stake 15, for example, and the rule 12 adjusted to extend a certain depth below the level. An excavation 16 may then be made so that the level is horizontal when the rule 12 rests on the ground.
