Abstract

2468. Curtis, F. Feb. 1. Range-finders.-By the use of a series of differentlyspaced stadia wires in openings in a slide 46, Fig. 7, movable across the axis of a telescope 10 in its focal plane, one set can be found which subtends a known length on a distant stadia rod 50 and thus gives the distance. To determine the distance of another point D, above the first as in tree measuring, a rod 16 movable in a direction at rightangles to the axis of the telescope is adjusted until a scale on its edge gives a reading corresponding to the ascertained distance A', a second graduated rod 21 pivoted to it is set parallel to the telescope, and the telescope is turned to view the point D. A third rod 38 pivoted to the first then gives, by its intersection with the second rod, the distance of D. A set of stadia wires can then be selected and the width of the tree at D ascertained.
