Abstract

1,270,529. Load indicating devices. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. Aug.29, 1969 [Aug.30, 1968], No.41509/68. Heading G1N. A device for indicating the tension in a roof bolt or the like comprises two thrust members (2, 3), Fig.2 (not shown) between which is sandwiched a resilient pad (4), the pad being provided with a device which directly indicates the girth of the pad, such girth varying in accordance with the value of a compressive force applied across the thrust members. The girth measuring device may comprise a resilient steel band (7) Fig. 2 (not shown) passing around a major part of the circumference of the pad and anchored at one end to one of the thrust members, the other end being shaped as a pointer which is movable relative to a calibrated scale marked on the other thrust member. Alternatively, the girth measuring device may comprise a pair of co-axial plastics tubes 22, 23 both of which pass around a major part of the circumference of the pad in such a way that a calibrated scale 27 on the inner tube 23 is visible between and co-operates to provide readings against the ends 28, 29 of the outer tube 22, the tube 22, being maintained in contact with a circumferential groove 20 in the pad by an annular coiled spring 25 located within the inner tube 23. The pad may be of rubber and is bonded to the thrust members (2, 3) which may be of steel.
