Abstract

1,119,530. Photo-elastic stress indicators. C-I-M CONSULTANTS Ltd. July 30, 1965 [July 31, 1964], No.32787/65. Heading G1W. An instrument for sensing a change in a compressive load or in a tensile load comprises a body portion formed of structurally rigid non- birefringent material, a birefringent material associated with said body portion in fixed relationship thereto and an unhindered bore through said body for applying said body portion to a material whose change in compressive load or tensile load is to be sensed. In one embodiment see Fig. 1 the instrument comprises a cylinder 10 provided with a central bore and covered at one end with a disc 14 of birefringent material, a reflective layer of material being positioned between the disc 14 and the end of the cylinder. In a modification, the cylinder has an upper and lower flange between which the birefringent material is placed. The instrument is provided with the central bore so that it may be fitted to the member to be stressed.
