Apparatus for testing chains, wire ropes and other like tension members comprises a stationary frame, a longitudinally movable component mounted in the frame and connectable to the member under test, and a compressible resistance strain gauge mounted so as to undergo compression between the frame and movable member. Frame 10 is secured at one end of a testing pit and includes cross-beams 12, 13 defining an opening 14 through which a longitudinally movable buckle 20, connected through eye 22 to the test member, slides freely. Also mounted on the frame are inner and outer bridge members 15, 16 which carry knife-edge bearings 18 forming a three-point support for buckle 20. Links 23, 24 are mounted on bearings 18 and carry the buckle on further bearings comprising knife edges 27 and V- bearings 26. Buckle 20 has a central opening 21 in which is located a strain gauge 30, which bears at one end against member 31 on frame 10 and at the other end against member 32 on the buckle. Self-aligning pads 33, e.g. of thermosetting resin, or metal, are provided at each end, and gauge 30 may be supported in recesses 33A in the pads, or by U-brackets on the frame or buckle. Damping devices consisting of telescopic casings 40, 41, having an internal arrangement of coaxial spring rings, are provided to resist recoil if the tested member breaks, or alternatively hydraulic cylinder-andpiston dashpots may be provided. Instead of three-point support, two bearings may be provided at each end, or the buckle may be supported by flexible plates instead of links 23 and bearings 18, 27.
