Abstract

1,270,277. Filling cartons with powder. C. W. VOGT. 25 July, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 37395/69. Heading B8C. In a packaging apparatus, a carton 15 having a body 16 and closure flaps 18-21 is gripped between a sealing member carried by a supporting shroud 26 and a sealing member carried by a pressure-differential filler 27 which depends into the body 16, and the body 16 is filled to overflowing with powder, closure of said flaps 18-21 causing the overflowing powder to be displaced into a depression left by the filler 27. The shroud 26 comprises two parts which abut on a plane diagonal of the shroud, each part having internal ribs 55 which support a screen 54 and having ports 56 connected to a vacuum source via lines 57. The filler 27 defines a valve chamber 30 housing an annular flexible valve member 40 and connected selectively to a vacuum or pressure source via a line 48. The bore of the valve member 40 is closed by four resilient flaps (45, Fig. 2). The filler 27 also defines a chamber 37 which communicates with the carton body via a filter 49. In operation, the line 48 is connected to the vacuum source and powder from a magazine 38 falls on to the flaps (45), the interior of the carton and the chamber 37 then being connected to a vacuum source via a line 63 to cause the flaps (45) to open. The shroud 26 and the filler 27 are relatively vertically movable. The carton is provided with a liner 22 which extends above the closure flap 20, but not above the other flaps.
