Abstract
559,988. Soldering food containers. CLARKE, D. H. Nov. 4, 1942, No. 15522. [Class 83 (iv)] An apparatus for sealing food containers C and comprising a main sealing chamber A which may be evacuated or filled with inert gas, is provided with an auxiliary chamber or turret F in which the sealing tool H is mounted, the chambers being connected by an opening E closed by a movable cover G. The main chamber is evacuated and gas filled when the cover is closed so as to avoid the leakage of air thereinto round the sealing tool bearings &c. The chamber A which is provided with a hinged door B for insertion and removal of the containers, is provided with pipes L, M leading respectively to the evacuating and gas supply apparatus, and each containing a stop cock N, O. After evacuating and filling the chamber A with gas when the cover G is closed, the cover is opened by an external lever connected thereto in an airtight manner and the soldering-iron H, which is slidable in a movable ball mounting J in the turret in both cases in an airtight manner, is pushed through the opening E to seal the vent D in the container whereupon the tool is withdrawn the cover and stop cock O closed and the door B opened and the container removed. The turret is provided with a transparent viewing panel K. The chamber A may receive a number of containers and a number of sealing tools may be used.
