Abstract

1,075,421. Sealing containers. VICKERS Ltd. March 5, 1964 [March 8, 1963], No. 9442/63. Heading B8C. An automatically controlled machine (Fig. 1) first vents a closed chamber containing a container C, then introduces an inert gas to the chamber, and finally seals the mouth of the container: this programme is initiated by closing the lid 2 of the chamber. In the configuration shown the sealing means comprise electrically heated jaws 10, 13, the jaw 13 being attached to a piston 22 which is moved by compressed air. The chamber is evacuated by means 53 and an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, delivered by a pipe 25. The inert gas may be below atmospheric pressure and after the mouth is heat sealed the pressure in the chamber is returned to normal by an air pipe 26. Operation is started whey the lid 2 is closed, causing an arm 5 to push arm 39 against rod 40 and thus join up contacts 41 and 43. The machine stops automatically when the shaft 28 has turned through one complete revolution, at which stage the sealing process will have been completed. In a second configuration two chambers are provided which work alternatively from a combined programming device.
