A bag (136) (Fig. 9, not shown) to be vacuum sealed about a product (135) is placed over the end of a vacuum conduit (53) which is then moved, together with the bag which slides over a table (29), to a station where a clip is applied about the bag neck. Application' of suction to the conduit, and the operation of the clipping device, are controlled automatically by movement of the vacuum conduit. In the form shown the conduit terminates in a handle over which the operator holds the bag with one hand. As the operator subsequently moves the conduit about a shaft (100). (Fig. 1, not shown) successively operating a valve (111) controlling the application of suction, a gate (44) (Fig. 12, not shown) holding the bag neck in the clipping position, and a pneumatic delay relay which operates the clipping device. A guillotine (47) cuts off the part of the bag beyond the clip. The height of the table (29) can be adjusted. The clipping device may consist of a ram (43) (Fig. 4, not shown) pushing a clip (42) from a magazine (39) (Fig. 1, not shown) down a guide (40) to a co-operating anvil (41). Alternatively the clipping device described in U.S.A. Specifications Nos. 2,879,512 and 2,880,415 may be used.
