Abstract

1,146,477. Sealing containers. PRESS & CO. K.G. MASCHINENFABBIK. 13 June, 1966 [22 June, 1965], No. 26236/66. Heading B8C. A filled container 26 is sealed with a plastics film by lifting through and entraining in the softened film 2, means such as compressed air or vacuum drawing then being used to press the film 2 about the walls of the container 26. In the preferred embodiment the film 2 is fed intermittently from a roll (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), a suitable length being cut by cutters (5, 6), after which the cut portion is fed on to a support 8, Fig. 2, and across an aperture 9 therein. A punch 10 is then lowered, the film 2 being retained over the aperture 9 by a spring- biased holder 18 mounted on the punch 10, and an edge-cutter 21 having a serrated cutting edge, Fig. 6 (not shown), perforates the film around the perimeter of the aperture. The film 2, Fig. 2, is softened by spraying with a solvent in liquid or gaseous form, or by heat. A lifting table 28 carrying the container 26 is then raised through the aperture 9, the rim 27 of the container engaging the softened film 2 and pressing it upwards against a resiliently mounted plate 24, which moulds it into the container mouth to form a depression therein. Subsequently the punch 10 is lowered further to sever the film 2 completely around the aperture perimeter, and the film is pressed into conformity with the outer wall of the container either by compressed air directed from above, or by a vacuum established below. When the film has re-solidified the table 28 is lowered and the sealed container is discharged, an out wardly directed serrated flange (34), Fig. 5 (not shown), formed by the shaping of the film against an upper rim 30, Fig. 2, of the table 28, providing a grip for handling and opening of the container. The operation of the moving parts of the apparatus may be by pistons controlled by the air which is used to shape the film. Oil may alternatively be used both for shaping and control. A series of such devices may be arranged in an endless chain, capstan or turret type machine.
