Abstract

Continuous labelling apparatus and method of applying labels to containers (17) of various shapes, wherein the labels may be other than rectangular in shape. A continuous pre-printed label stock (35) is fed between an anvil roller (41) and a rotary die (40) to sever the labels (13) scrap material is rewound (if continuous) or sucked into a vacuum member (54), (if discontinuous), each severed label is picked up by a rotary vacuum drum (25) and is supplied to a label applying station where the drum (25) and a container feed (15, 18) come together. A guide (42) and an air nozzle (43) guide the labels (13) to the drum (25). The distance between the die cutter roll (40) and the anvil roller (41) may be adjustable and means may be provided for automatically separating the roll (40) and roller (41) when the labelling apparatus is halted. <IMAGE>
