Abstract

1,043,214. Packaging-machines; cartons. W. R. GRACE & CO. Feb. 3, 1964 [May 10, 1963], No. 4533/64. Headings B8C and B8P. [Also in Division B5] A package is formed by setting up a carton blank within a mould, lining the carton within the mould by a heated thermoplastic film, filling it and heat sealing a covering material to a peripheral flange extending from the carton sides. The lining film and cover may be of laminated construction and the blank may have a cut-out 14 to give a window. The flanges may meet along picture-frame joints (Fig. 2a, not shown). The blanks are placed in female moulds 29 on a conveyer 28 after severing from a scored web 27. Alternatively, they may be supplied from a magazine. A die 31 sets them up and means 32 may apply adhesive to the flanges. Lining material 43 passes over a heated roll 34 and is vacuum drawn into the carton by means 35, 37. Apertures 16 or perforations may be provided in the blank to facilitate this. The carton is cooled and then filled by means 36. The cover material 39 is heat sealed on by a head 41 after evacuating and/or gassing if required and the individual packages severed by a knife 42. The carton motion may be made continuous by arranging cyclic movement of the package-forming means.
