Abstract
1,134,858. Packaging-machines. ANDERSON BROS. MFG. CO. 14 Aug., 1967 [25 Jan., 1967], No. 37301/67. Heading B8C. A method of vacuum packaging fluent material in a container that has a deformable base wherein the container is initially only partly filled comprises evacuating the container in an enclosure, sealing a cover on and then exposing it to the atmosphere so that the base deforms thereby reducing the volume of the container to that of the contents. Each container may be formed by heating a web of thermoplastic material 31 and moulding it by mechanical or fluid pressure. The mould 34 moves down to allow the web to be moved on by grippers 46, themselves moved by piston 47, to the filling station 49. Alternatively preformed containers may be used. A web 51 is then fed over the containers and at the evacuating station X both are enclosed in an enclosure 52, 53 where air is withdrawn via conduit 57 and valves 56. A sealing head 54 e.g. for pressure sensitive, heat sensitive, high frequency sealing &c. then seals the web 51 on to the flange around the container. Filling, evacuating and sealing may be performed at a single station if required (not shown or detailed). As shown the deformable part of the base 12a includes circular grooves of V cross-section. When valve 56 is turned to connect the enclosure with the atmosphere the base is moved towards the container top by the pressure, part 12a reversing its curvature. Cutters 65, 66 sever the containers from the web.
