Abstract
820,314. Sealing cans &c. MOORE, G. A., and BRESKIN, C. A. July 26, 1957 [Aug. 14, 1956], No. 23696/57. Class 49. [Also in Group XXVIII] Air is extracted from containers, packed e.g. with meat, and the containers are then sealed, by a device having exterior surface portions 33 converging to form a blunt edge 29 and an interior cavity 27 opening through an elongated slot in a portion of the blunt edge, suction passages 35 connecting the interior cavity 27 with the surface portions 33 of the device, and means 34 for connecting the cavity to a source of vacuum so that when a packed container a has its mouth b engaged over the surface portions 33 to close the outer ends of the suction passages 35, the vacuum in the cavity evacuates air from the container through the slot in the blunt edge and causes the mouth of the container to form an airtight seal with the surface portions 33, after which heat-sealing irons 5a are moved together to form a heat-sealed seam 41. In a modification, air evacuated from the container is replaced by an inert gas before sealing, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide, in which case means 34 is connected to a vacuum pump and to a source of inert gas, and clamps 45 may be used to prevent disengagement of the mouth b from the portions 33 when inert gas is admitted into the container after removal of air.
