Abstract

1,147,445. Packaging. G. N. ROTHERAY. 3 June, 1966 [3 June, 1965], No. 23630/65. Heading B8C. A flexible bag G, resting on a container lid C and surrounded by at least one portable support frame B, E, is packed with compressible articles such as wool " tops " and evacuated to compress the articles, after which an open-ended container (F) (Fig. 1, not shown) is passed over the bag and on to the lid C, to which it is secured by strapping or other means, whereupon the vacuum inside the bag is destroyed. As described, the frame B is wheeled over a grooved base board A, on which the lid C is placed with its side panels vertical and with a flap (5) registering with an opening (18) in the frame B. The bag G, having an L-shaped guard D resting on its bottom, is placed on the lid C and a vacuum nozzle H pushed into the bag through the opening (18) in the frame B. A second frame E is wheeled over the assembly and the top of the bag sealed when all of the tops have been packed, after which the bag is evacuated through the nozzle H to cause the tops to be compressed. The frames B, E are then wheeled away and an open-ended carton (F) lowered over the bag G and on to the lid C, to which it is secured by metal or other tapes. Finally, the nozzle H is withdrawn and air admitted to the package by punching holes through the carton and the bag. The carton (F) may be of cardboard, plywood or other suitable rigid or semi-rigid material .
