[Class 94(i)] A vacuum package is produced by packing a commodity into a container made from a material, such as polyvinyl chloride, which has a low rate of permeability to oxygen and nitrogen and a high rate to some other gas, such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide or ammonia, charging such other gas into the container so as to expel air therefrom, sealing the container and allowing the contained gas to pass through the walls of the container to the atmosphere. The container may subsequently be enclosed in a gas-resistant envelope to retain the vacuum.
