Abstract

978,985. Packaging. EXPA A.G. Aug. 23, 1963 [March 14, 1963], No. 33585/63. Heading B8C. Flowers are packed in a plastics envelope charged with a gas the nitrogen content of which exceeds that of air and in which the nitrogen-oxygen ratio is at least 5:1. The ingredients of the gas may vary within the following limits: nitrogen 78-92%, oxygen 4-16%, carbon dioxide 4-11%, by volume. The gas is mixed in a chamber, and cooled to a temperature below 0‹ C., before being filled into the envelope. A pressure of 20-28 lbs. p.s.i. may be applied to the envelope interior as a means of keeping it inflated. The flowers may be cooled to about 3‹ C. before being packed. The envelope is sealed by conventional means.
