Sealed packages are formed under vacuum by inserting a container of pliable heat-weldable material into a receptacle 8, filling the container with the material to be packaged, raising the receptacle 8 by means of a pneumatic cylinder 6 against an opening in a vacuum chamber 10, in which chamber the container is heat-sealed under vacuum produced by a suction pump 33. The container is moulded according to the interior shape of the receptacle 8, e.g. to a parallelopipedic cylindrical or prismatic shape, by the pressure of its contents. The receptacle 8 is then placed on a vertically reciprocable plate 7, the mouth of the container projecting from the receptacle. The operator causes the plate 7 to be raised, and vacuum to be created in the chamber 10. At a predetermined pressure a gauge 42 operates an electric valve 35 to move a pneumatic piston 27, thereby operating one of a pair of sealing jaws in the chamber 10. In closing, the jaws operate a micro-switch 12, time switch 41 and thereby an electro-pneumatic valve 31 controlling the air pressure in the, chamber 10. The contact of pressure gauge 42 is opened to displace the piston 27 to the right as seen in Fig. 1, and .thereby open the sealing jaws. On the appearance of a shaft 50 on the piston 27, the operator causes the plate 7 to be lowered.
