Abstract

1,005,947. Container closuring; packaging. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. May 29, 1964 [July 24, 1963], No. 29385/63. Headings B8C and B8T. A filled container, e.g. of powdered milk, has its gaseous content changed prior to the closuring thereof by gas-tightly covering its open end, withdrawing air therefrom while impeding the contents thereof against withdrawal, and restoring atmospheric pressure in the container by introducing an inert gas, e.g. hydrogen or nitrogen. As described this process immediately precedes the application of a cover to the container; the apparatus comprises a continuously rotatable spider 6 receiving filled containers 7, one at a time, from a conveyor, not shown. Each container is associated with a pad 10 having a filter 34, preventing the flow of container contents therefrom, and each pad is mounted on a hollow spindle 11 carried by an arm 12 extending from a pillar 13 rotatable with the spider. A cam roller 14 on each spindle engages a stationary cam 15 so that during rotation each pad is vertically reciprocated against spring action. Each spindle has a gas passage 32, 33 and slides in a stationary sleeve 28. The pillar includes a vacuum chamber 21 connected to a vacuum source, and a gas chamber 22 connected to an inert gas source; connections from chambers 21 and 22 lead to annular recesses 29, 30 in each sleeve 28. In operation the pad sealingly engages the container and the passage 32 is aligned with recess 29 causing the removal of air; continued spider rotation causes the spindle to rise to connect passage 32 to recess 30 thus permitting inert gas to be introduced. The container is then delivered to the sealer, not shown, which also has means for introducing an inert gas into the container headspace during the closuring operation.
