Abstract

930,528. Packaging. AKERLUND & RAUSING A.B. Jan. 30, 1962, No. 3484/62. Class 94(1). Non-aired roasted and ground coffee or other inert gas emitting foodstuff is loaded into containers 3, 4 which may be evacuated by the vacuum pump 24<SP>1</SP> and then recharged at a pressure above atmospheric from a carbondioxide source 29 through appropriate cocks and reducing valves. The material is then fed to a hopper 9 by feeders 30 or 31, the level in the hopper being controlled by the agitator blade 32 which makes contact with the ring 33 thus completing or interrupting the electricity supply to the feeder 30 or 31. The plate valve 7 determines which container 3 or 4 is connected to the hopper 9. The screw conveyer 11 then discharges the material into the tube formed by the shaping plate 14 from the web 15 which is longitudinally sealed by the heater 13, the container 41 being supplied from the source 29 through the reducing valve 42 to maintain an over-pressure. Just before the longitudinally movable sealing jaws 52, 53 close the package 54 it is momentarily connected via the nozzle 47 to the vacuum reservoir 49 to reduce the interior volume of the package. This allows subsequent expansion of of the package due to deliberation of gases from the packaged material. The carbon dioxide source 29 is also connected via pipes 38, 39 with the hopper 9 and the tube 13, the valve 36 controlling the latter being electrically operated by means of a cam 51 on the packaging machine so that the valve 36 is shut when the valve 48 opens and vice versa. The package formed has its sealing line 57 preferably curved as at 57a or 57b to relieve the strain at the outside edge of the package at the seal.
